A new babysitter’s arrival can bring curiosity, hesitation or several emotions at once. Letting the child know in advance and explaining what will happen helps them understand the situation.

Explain the childcare arrangements in simple terms

Explain who will come, when, what the child will do, and when the parent will return. Avoid promises you cannot guarantee, such as an uncertain return time.

Introduce the person

Show a public photo if one is available, and use the first name the person wishes to use. When possible, arrange a brief conversation before the first childcare session.

Prepare what is familiar to the child

Review mealtime and bedtime routines, as well as permitted comfort items. Clearly tell the child whom they can talk to if they have a question or do not feel well.

Respect their reactions

Do not force hugs or physical closeness. Welcome questions and restate the plan. An emotional reaction at departure does not, by itself, mean the childcare session will go badly.

Share instructions with the babysitter

The parent shares particular needs, allergies, any treatments, authorised people and emergency contacts. Important health information must never be entrusted to the child alone.
